This recognition of textile history maintains a difference between the past and the present, it is not based on nostalgia and repetition, but it does assert that textiles are not a neutral medium. Tom Molloy (fine art trained) made a piece of work Behind Every Great Man, 2006, ‘cross stitched portraits of all the First Ladies of the USA’, Figure 3.18, Molloy ‘made a series of working drawings and hired a friend … to cross stitch them.’ 85 They agreed that ‘she should be paid the Irish hourly minimum wage to carry out the work … in keeping with the conceptual nature of the project.’ She did not see the work ‘as a collaboration’ and therefore ‘wanted to remain anonymous relative to the overall authorship of the piece.’ Molloy’s work is about ‘notions of different kinds of power ... political, economic, sexual, gender, artistic, personal’ and he also ‘deals with work and how it is valued and rewarded within our society.’ 86 It could be argued that the project perpetuated and reinforced the (low) value of woman’s work, which given the concept would be ironic.
