My knitwear designer daughter saw bands of textured pewter, black, grey and orange across narrow strips of paper. I was expecting a book that detailed embroidery stiches...this book beautifully illustrates not only stitches on various fabrics, but also shows cross stitch, a wide scope of needlepoint styles (including Bargello), smocking, drawn-thread work, applying sequins and beads, cutwork, applique and so much more!

(2005) 'On Stuff and Nonsense’ in Textiles Critical & Primary Sources, vol 4, 2012. 39 Auther, E., (2009) cites Louise Bourgeois reviewing an exhibition of weave as ‘delightful’ and ‘engaging’ bur ‘rarely liberating themselves from decoration.’ 279 The curator, Jonathan Holstein, when selecting work from the Whitney Museum collection for an exhibition of Amish quilts (1971), dismissed the appliqué quilts as ‘pretty’ and ‘decorative’ and selected the geometric, abstract, pieced quilts instead; describing them as ‘strong’, ‘bold’, ‘vigorous’, ‘real art’ that ‘mirror in startling ways contemporary painting trends.’ 40 This prompted the art historian, Patricia Mainardi, to point out that the quilts were 150 years old so it was contemporary painting that was doing the mirroring and that the quilts should be seen on their own terms. 41 The implication was that the quilts could only be seen as art in so far as they fitted in with contemporary painting discourses; therefore pieced quilts could be assimilated as ‘abstract art’ but appliqué quilts or quilts with personal meanings could not.

On her death the British Museum were offered 100 of her ‘needle-paintings’ which they declined due to space, and most of her work has now been lost. 210 Elissa Auther (2004) analyses Greenberg’s writing on ‘the decorative’ and contends that ‘the rhetorical power of the opposition of abstraction to decoration’ in Greenberg’s work ‘derives from the opposition of art to craft.’ 15 Auther argues that ‘the decorative’ formed the basis for ‘categorical distinctions between media, distinctions anterior to value in art.’ 16 Greenberg maintained the hierarchy of art and craft not only through abstraction but also through concepts such as skill, ornamentation and decoration; privileging ‘virility, masculinity, individualism, autonomy, and experimentation’ against feminine, decorative, minor arts. 17 Auther sees the lasting impact of Greenberg’s use of the decorative in ‘the negative example of the separation of fine art from craft.’ 18 In String, Felt, Thread, (2009) Auther examines fiber art, process art and feminist art in the U.

Her work was spotted at a Craft Fair and she was awarded a place on the Making It programme, a 2-year business start-up for ‘makers in craft and applied arts.’ 65 This allowed her to develop her metal canvases, Figures 4.6 and 4.7, but they remained ‘one off pieces … for exhibitions, they wouldn’t be commercial.’ To make the work more commercial and work with the limitations of her present studio space she has been trying out some smaller metal works, Figure 4.8.

The paper embroidery craft technique is similar to embroidery on fabric. In Australia she had ‘a table as a studio space’ and the work she produced was table sized, while in Finland she ‘had a space the size of this whole textile department to myself’ and all sorts of equipment and the work she made was 12ft x 8ft. ‘I think you respond to the space you are given.’ She doesn’t have a studio at home but while working at the School of Art was ‘able to print large pieces’ in the print room and then ‘embellish them at home, I can fold them up and control them and stitch on a bit at a time.’ If she hadn’t had the university space at the print stage she would ‘have had to make the work differently, you make what you can with the materials you have got, the space you’ve got and the funding you’ve got.’ 14 Helen O’Hare and Wilma Kirkpatrick worked on the Saint Anne’s Cathedral Titanic funeral pall commission in the School of Art and at home.
